In today's world, we all know the risk of germs and disease and we want to do whatever we can to try to stay safe. There are lots of simple steps you can take to protect yourself from germs throughout the whole year, not just cold and flu season. The most important thing that you can do is to ensure that an individual is using proper hand care techniques which include thorough washing, moisturizing and the use of a good, medical grade hand sanitizer.

We all know that good hand washing practices can help reduce the risk of germs; the thing is that most people do not know how to wash their hands properly. Start with warm water and wet the hands, then apply soap. Ensure that an individual is using a soap that is antimicrobial or anti-bacterial (they mean the same thing). Soap for at least 20-30 seconds before rinsing. Some people recommend before eating or preparing food to soap and rinse a second time. Dry hands with a clean paper towel and use it to turn off the water. Apply a sanitizer product next.

Ensure that between washings and after bathing, you take the extra step of using a high quality moisturizer to prevent chaffing and cracking of the skin. This damage, although minor, may allow germs to enter your system. A medical grade moisturizer that contains cataphyll is best and leaves a non-greasy, silky smooth feeling to your hands.

Ensure that an individual is taking the time to care for your nails and cuticles, keep a good manicure to help prevent accidental nicks and scraps to your own hands from your nails. Ensure that an individual is keeping your cuticles healthy to prevent cracking and tearing. This is a very volatile place for your body in the battle against germs.

The use of gloves is also a good practice when an individual is performing tasks that may expose them to germ contact. The best gloves to use are those that are either nitrile or medical grade vinyl. Latex gloves are very good but repeated long term exposure to them may lead to a latex allergy preventing you from ever being able to contact other latex products again.

You should always have some type of sanitizer available to you as well. These products come in a wide variety of forms but the most popular styles are the gel or foam variety. The gel style is more common is the retail environment but the foam style is more effective in providing comprehensive germ protection.

The best sanitizers are those that contain not only alcohol but also povidone-iodine. You may also want to find a product that contains aloe vera to help keep your skin healthy and soft. Aloe is also a natural antibacterial ingredient that offers an additional level of protection.

Using a good hand sanitizer, such as Purell, and observing proper hand care can be a great help in keeping you healthy and germ free. It's easy to keep yourself healthy no matter the season, just think of how great it will be when you can add up all those unused sick days for a longer vacation this year. Proper hand care is the key and its simple.

I wash my hands an estimated 50 times a day. I always carry a bottle of Purrell around with me for times that I am unable to reach a sink and soap.
